The Dragon occupies a very important position in Chinese mythology. It shows up in arts, literature, poetry, architecture, songs, and many aspects of the Chinese conscience. Folklore says that pearls are objects of infatuation for these powerful creatures. In China, pearls were believed to be droplets that fall like rain from the moon into the sea, where they are often swallowed by oysters. So it follows that the pearl which dragons long for most of all is the moon itself. Many have been known to go mad with infatuation and try to steal it from the sky, resulting in a lunar eclipse. This hand carved wall hanging, made from cattle bone, captures this adorable story well. It has two dragons circling the moon, where the word fu meaning happiness, appears during the eclipse.
